The Left Hand of Darkness is a 1969 science fiction novel written by Ursula le Guin. I designed a hardcover special edition of the book, including a dust jacket cover. The design uses a minimalist graphic style, featuring a cool-toned palette in reference to the fictional planet Winter which serves as the novel’s setting, with contrasting color fields of light and dark blue to emphasize the harmony of light and darkness—a recurring theme throughout the book—as well as the feeling of contact between two different worlds.
